Gordon Fernandes and Charles Dwyer, the organsiers of the Asia Superyacht Rendezvous, have reported that the international superyacht gathering held on December 17 and 18 in Phuket, Thailand was the most exciting sailing event in its nine year history.
Charlie Dwyer, captain of Yanneke Too said "This is the most successful sailing event the Asia Superyacht
Rendezvous has had to date. The boats were evenly matched and the crew
work as good as I have seen in any event. The sight of the superyachts
sailing within a few boat lengths of each other was truly spectacular.
It was superyacht racing at its best"
The 48-metre Ron Holland designed Thalia stood out amongst the fleet. In 15 to 18 knots of breeze and with outstanding team work onboard, Thalia was able to come from behind and pass the fleet. Naos and Yanneke Too were neck and neck until Noas tacked early with the shift and took Yanneke Too just a few boat lengths before the finish. Obsession II and Asia came in fifth and sixth.
The event gave crews of both power and sailing yachts a chance to relax and have fun together. "Elegance with an informal atmosphere is what makes this event so successful", commented the organisers.
A cocktail party was held aboard superyacht Silolona following the sailing event. Reportedly the highlight of the evening was the appearance of the Indonesian crew of 15, dressed in traditional regalia, as they gave a performance using traditional instruments accompanied by spirited and harmonious vocals, including a few of the old 'sea chanteys'.
The Chedi was the host luxury hotel, providing dining events staged in beautifully designed tropical settings. The 'Gala Dinner' featured Thai dancing and singing entertainment, a live band for dancing, gourmet dinner and fine wine. In closing, guests joined together on the beach to set adrift Chinese floating lanterns.
The 2010 Asia Superyacht Rendezvous will take place on and off the shores of Phuket Island from December 16 to 18, 2010 with many 2009 participants planning to return and new superyachts joining in. The invitation-only event welcomes superyachts of minimum 30-metres LOA to the Asia Superyacht Rendezvous 10-year Celebration.
