Upon arriving at the Abu Dhabi Yacht Show
we heard some rumours about one of the yachts in attendance having
experienced some trouble with pirates en route to the show. A little
digging found that the yacht concerned was the 60m Lurssen built Linda Lou. Synfo.com spoke to the Captain of Linda Lou, Michael Schueler, to find out more.
Linda Lou Captain
Schueler told us that as part of the crossing all appropriate counter
measures for a possible pirate attack were put into place, including
barbed wire, a LRAD (long range acoustical device) and a designated
safe room. "We were well prepared," he said. On the day of the
incident Linda Lou was underway when they came within mile and half of a pirate mothership that had four heavily manned skiffs alongside. As Linda Lou
came nearby three of the four skiffs took off and approached her with
the sun behind them. At this point Captain Schueler took the decision
to put all the women into the safe room and, not wanting the situation
to escalate to the point where the skiffs were alongside, put out a
call on the VHF system and were responded to by a coalition warship
that was also within the vicinity. The warship informed Linda Lou
that they were sending a helicopter to their location and would be
there within six minutes. The yacht upped its hp and continued
underway until the helicopter arrived, within six minutes as promised,
and handled the situation from there, with the skiffs retreating. The
yacht was then able to proceed as normal, with another warship
accompanying her for some of the way.
This is a story that
thankfully had a good outcome and is an example of how important it is
for yachts to be prepared when entering zones that are vulnerable to
piracy threats. Captain Schueler concluded our conversation by
stressing how important it is to "keep a good watch out and have a plan
and know when to call for help." With a pirate attack successfully
avoided, his advice would be sensible to follow.
