The 27m luxury sailing yacht Il Sovereign, formally Tiketitan,
built by well-known superyacht yard Wally, caught fire yesterday on the
premises of STP Palma, Mallorca. According to one well-placed source
involved in the superyacht industry, the fire started out in the
yacht’s engine room at approximately 3pm, with the staff from the yard
and her crew first on scene closely followed by local fire fighters.
The blaze was eventually brought under control using foam suppressant
after some two hours of hard work on the part of the fire fighters,
with reports of some burns and smoke inhalation suffered by the crew
and emergency services.

One
eye witness to the fire told Synfo.com that “it was the sort of fire
that happens very quickly, and very quickly there is little that can be
done”. Crew members reportedly first heard an explosion followed by the
fast and immediate spread of the fire, with the witness saying “after
three minutes it was already out of control”. Another unfortunate
aspect of the incident was that another Wally yacht was located close
and downwind of the Tiketitan, the 28.7m Open Season and
any possible damage to that vessel is still being assessed. Yacht
insurance provider Pantaenius is the insurer for both of the Wally
boats and had a representative onsite within twenty minutes to watch
the effort, telling Synfo.com that while the cause of the fire is as
yet unknown their experts are now at work carrying out all the due
diligence assessments.
