Charl Dettmer, ex-crew on Kogo and Skat among others, has created an innovative service borne out of crew frustrations from looking to buy property. “Although many of us are sitting on savings that we want to invest in property, the nature of the job means it is very difficult to do all the necessary research,” explains Dettmer. In response he has created a new service with wife Ty (both pictured) and her brother Judson Mathias to help with the situation: Yacht Crew Property.

The company searches for the right type of property and looks into other considerations, such as tax. “We realise this is a factor for each crewmember. Most of the properties we have on offer are either in tax-free states or offer very favourable tax incentives. A number of the properties offer resident permits, such as in Mauritius, which is turning out to be a popular choice, especially with South Africans.”
Another option includes a hotel-managed home that is rented out when the owner is not there and works well for a crewmember’s annual leave. Locations sourced have included Grenada, Mauritius, St Lucia, Thailand, Brazil, Fiji and Malaysia.
