A good quality cruising guide is an essential professional tool when it
comes to sourcing the right information, contacts and ideas for
destinations to entertain the guests. So when highly experienced
Captain Richard Morris of Sydney Superyacht Services (part of the
Australasian Superyacht Services group) helped Anthony Twibill and
Hillary Buckman put together a comprehensive cruising guide entitled The Great Southern Route Guide, he knew what would be needed from his years of experience in yachting.
The
idea for the guide stemmed from the problems Captain Morris found in
the 1990s when the owner of his superyacht wanted to visit a new, less
well-known destination - he found that there was no single place he
could go to for all the information such as transiting the Panama
Canal, where to refuel and so on. He felt there was a need for a
comprehensive introduction to the regions covered by The Great Southern Route Guide.
For the 2010-2011 edition of The Great Southern Route Guide
- the second in the series - the publishers approached some 42 captains
to contribute personal experiences, recommendations and key tips for
cruising in the waters off the usual milk run. The eight regions
covered in the guide include the Middle East, Indian Ocean, Asia,
Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Ocean and The
Americas (from Alaska to Argentina and even guidance on Antarctica).
Country
guides include introductions to the location with key facts and
highlights, travel stories from superyacht captains, customs and
immigration information, Jeppessen marine charts, local agents,
distance to other superyacht destinations and listings of superyachts
that have recently visited. There are also weather guides to the
regions written by Weather Routing Inc.
The
new 2010-2011 guide is now available free of charge (although postage
needs to be paid - from $30 in Australia to $70 in Europe) to
superyachts. For more information visit greatsouthernroute.com
