The Deckcrew Guidebook is a newly published guide aimed at inexperienced deckhands to give them an idea about life onboard superyachts. The book's author wrote the book as a response to the lack of written training material for newcomers to the superyacht industry. To this end the publishers consider the book to be a unique publication and "the first of its kind for the yachting industry."
The book is only meant as an introduction to becoming a deckhand in the industry rather than hoping to teach the reader everything there is to know, which would be impossible without hands-on experience. Having said that, it is surprisingly informative.
The guide follows a logical format from finding that first job in the industry to getting established onboard and the duties that will be expected of a new deckhand. For the many people who attempt to enter with industry with no prior knowledge of yachting the book has a wealth of wisdom to offer.
The book decodes many of the perplexing nautical terms in an extensive glossary. The 22 chapters cover subjects such as safety, deck stowage and watertight integrity, tender operations, anchor operations and making passage, bridge procedures at sea and security. As a general overview of what to expect as a deckhand nothing is left out. There is even a section on visas, logbooks and documentation.
The only drawback to the book is that some of the photographic illustrations are a little unclear, although this is only a minor problem considering the information that is on offer. The guide is expensive but this is due to the specialist knowledge on offer and the relatively small print run.
The author, Vaughan Poynter has been an active deck officer in the luxury yachting industry for the last 12 years and has worked on a number of luxury yachts. His most recent position was as 2nd officer Navigator on MY Dubai, the largest privately owned yacht in the world. He describes his personal vision as wanting "To create a unique publication that will inform and provide specific
information for both novice and professional candidates who wish to
work onboard the world's ever-growing luxury yacht fleet."
The Deckcrew Guidebook is available to order from the V7 Crew Consulting website for AUS $79 (50.6 EUROS).
